About Romègas Hotel

The Romègas Hotel is a 5-star hotel that opened in summer 2026. It occupies a restored palazzo on Old Bakery Street, in the centre of Valletta. The building is named after Mathurin Romegas, a famous knight of the Order of St John. The limestone, inner courtyards and Maltese balconies have been preserved. A collection of works by Maltese artists adorns the corridors and rooms.

The hotel has just 22 rooms and suites, spread across ten categories. Classic rooms overlook an inner courtyard. Deluxe and Executive rooms face the street, some with a balcony. The largest, the Romègas Suite, is a 67 m² duplex with a spiral staircase. All have a king-size bed, a walk-in shower and Bulgari toiletries.

Dining is entrusted to Maltese chef Marvin Gauci. His restaurant Caviar & Bull serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served at the table, with no buffet. A cocktail bar occupies an inner courtyard beneath a glass roof. In the evening, cocktails are also served on the roof terrace.

For relaxation, the hotel relies on its rooftop outdoor pool. The pool is small, but the view over Marsamxett Harbour is superb. There is no spa or gym. Children are welcome, with a free cot. The hotel is nonetheless designed for couples, with no extra beds or kids’ club.

Romègas Hotel reviews

Summary of 23 recent reviews

The first reviews, still few in number, are unanimous on one point: the staff. Almost every guest praises a warm, helpful and highly professional team. Many mention the evening turndown, the butler service and personalised notes in the room. The team is also happy to arrange private tours, transfers and bookings. Several guests describe a personalised welcome from the moment they arrive. The staff remember names and anticipate requests.

The location is the other great asset. The street is quiet, yet the whole historic centre can be explored on foot. The palazzo’s design is very popular, with its fine materials and artworks. The new rooms are felt to be comfortable, quiet and spotless. The Caviar & Bull restaurant and its cocktails also receive a great deal of praise. Breakfast served at the table is appreciated for its quality. Finally, the roof terrace wins people over with its view of the city and the harbour. Guests recommend going up at sunset.

Criticism remains rare and concerns details. A few bathrooms lack storage by the basin or a socket for the hairdryer. The rooftop pool is felt to be small, and its water cool in autumn. The hotel has no car park, spa or gym. Finally, it opened in summer 2026, so there is little hindsight yet. Ratings are currently at the maximum on almost every platform. It remains to be seen whether this standard holds up in high season.

The Romègas Hotel is best suited to couples who want to explore Valletta in an intimate, refined setting. It will also appeal to travellers with an eye for art and heritage. Families with several children and anyone after a spa or a pool for swimming will do better elsewhere.
