Cugó Gran Macina, Senglea

The Cugó Gran Macina is a boutique hotel in Senglea, one of the Three Cities. It occupies the Macina, a fortified building erected in the 16th century by the Knights of St John. Its name recalls the large wooden crane once used to fit masts to ships. Restored, the building became a hotel in 2018. It overlooks the marina, facing Birgu, a few minutes by boat from Valletta.

The hotel has just 21 suites, from 40 to 130 m². Many are split-level, with a mezzanine bedroom beneath stone vaults. The two largest have two bedrooms and a kitchenette. Most overlook the harbour. The Fortress Suite, however, only has a skylight. All are air-conditioned, and several bathrooms have underfloor heating.

The Little Bastion restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine with Maltese touches. Its terrace faces the boats in the marina. Breakfast is served at the table, à la carte, with no buffet. Dinner is only available from Wednesday to Sunday. On other evenings, the Senglea and Birgu waterfronts offer plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

For relaxation, an unheated pool sits on the roof of the annexe. It offers superb views over Birgu and Cospicua, with sunbeds and drinks service. It is open from 10 am to 8 pm and closes from November to April. The hotel has no spa or gym, but offers in-suite massages. Children are welcome and cots are free. The atmosphere, however, remains that of an intimate hotel designed for couples.

Guests appreciate the good advice, restaurant bookings and birthday touches. The concierge also replies by messaging app, which many find very convenient. The suites are the second big plus. Vast and often split-level, they combine ancient vaults with contemporary furniture.

The location is liked for its calm and its view of the marina. The ferry to Valletta leaves five minutes’ walk away. The crossing takes about ten minutes. The à la carte breakfast scores highly, as does dinner at the hotel restaurant. Several guests, however, miss a buffet and find the morning service sometimes slow. The restaurants on the nearby waterfront round off the evening options nicely.

The criticism mainly concerns the old building. Some suites only have a small window or a skylight. Others suffer from damp and a musty smell, especially in winter. The rooftop pool is judged small, short on shade and cold outside summer. The restaurant closes two evenings a week. A few maintenance issues also come up: worn furniture, stone dust or a rather small bathroom. Finally, the hotel has no spa or gym.

The Cugó Gran Macina is best suited to couples looking for a quiet place with character. It also appeals to families thanks to its large two-bedroom suites. It wins over those who want to explore Valletta and the Three Cities by boat. It is best to book a brighter harbour-side suite. Nightlife lovers and fans of large resorts with a spa will feel less at home.
