Golden Bay
Mellieħa · West · 35.934°N, 14.344°E
Golden Bay (Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa in Maltese) is one of the few large beaches of natural golden sand on Malta's main island, tucked into a fold of rugged cliffs on the west coast, near the village of Manikata. Its fine sand, gentle slope and shallow water make it a firm favourite with families, as you can wade a long way out before getting out of your depth. It is also one of the most photographed beaches in the archipelago, famed for some of the finest sunsets in Malta, best admired from the rocks or from the 17th-century watchtower that overlooks the bay. A Blue Flag beach, it is fully equipped, with sunbeds, parasols, bars, dining and a wide range of water sports. The flip side of its rarity is that it is a victim of its own popularity: packed in high season, its water turns murky in the afternoon, and the large hotel resort towering above it divides opinion.
Golden Bay is one of the 10 Blue Flag beaches in Malta. The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised eco-label awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that meet rigorous criteria in four areas: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services. It is one of the most trusted quality marks for a clean, safe and well-managed beach worldwide.

Activities available at Golden Bay
Golden Bay is a lively spot for water sports. Snorkelling is the most popular, along the rocks that frame the bay, where the water stays clear and full of fish. Boat trips also set off from the beach to the nearby caves, the island of Comino and its Blue Lagoon. Jet skis, kayaks and pedal boats can be rented on the sand, and you can try parasailing or scuba diving. Finally, when the western swell picks up, Golden Bay and the neighbouring Riviera Beach rank among the island's few surf spots. A Maltese surf school offers a beginner surf lesson and stand up paddle sessions.
Where to stay near Golden Bay
A single hotel resort overlooks the beach, the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Golden Sands. For travellers looking for other places to stay, the answer is to book a hotel in the centre of Mellieħa, about ten minutes from Golden Bay by car, such as the Maritim Antonine, the Solana or the Pergola. These hotels are often more affordable than the Radisson Blu and sit in a livelier area. The other alternative is to stay at a hotel in St Paul's Bay, around twenty minutes from Golden Bay by car, such as the Pebbles Resort.
Location of Golden Bay
Golden Bay, Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa in Maltese, opens onto Malta's west coast, in the municipality of Mellieħa, near the villages of Manikata and Mġarr. It is an out-of-the-way beach, isolated in the island's rural north-west and relatively hard to reach from Malta's main lively hubs such as Sliema, St Julian's or Valletta, from which it is separated by anything from forty-five minutes to well over an hour by bus. The bay is hemmed in by cliffs crowned with a 17th-century watchtower, built by the Order of St John. On the far side of the headland, a flight of steps leads down to the wilder twin bay of Għajn Tuffieħa; a walking trail continues along the coast towards Ġnejna beach and crosses Majjistral Nature Park. Above the sand, the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Golden Sands is the only large building on this otherwise very unspoilt shoreline.
Getting to Golden Bay
By bus to Golden Bay
Golden Bay is served by the Għajn Tuffieħa bus terminus, a few minutes' walk down the hill (the return trip is uphill). Depending on where you start, several direct routes will get you there. In high season, leave yourself some leeway: the buses back are often packed in the late afternoon.

By car to Golden Bay
If you have gone for a car rental during your stay in Malta, Golden Bay has two car parks: one lower down, right next to the sand, the other at the top of the hill. Both are free, but they fill up fast in high season, sometimes as early as mid-morning. Watch out for the yellow lines along the road, where parking is fined.
The simplest option remains a car with a driver. Maltese taxis (the white taxis) are not recommended; you are better off using a ride-hailing app. In Malta, the three most popular are eCabs (the local service), Uber and Bolt, with comparable service and fares. Allow around 30 minutes from the airport and 45 minutes from Sliema or St Julian's.
The road down to the bay is narrow and winding towards the end; drive carefully, especially late in the day, when traffic picks up around sunset.
Reviews of Golden Bay
Golden Bay is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Malta, and the crowds bear that out. Its golden sand, a rarity on an island that is mostly rock, its gentle slope suited to children and its sunsets over the sea all explain an appeal that shows no sign of fading.
That is also its main weakness: as the only large sandy beach on this stretch of coast, it draws the crowds and fills up from late morning in summer, particularly at weekends. The water, crystal clear early in the day, turns murky in the afternoon as seaweed and sand are churned up by swimmers, then clears again beyond the buoys or along the rocky sides that are good for snorkelling. The cleanliness of the sand suffers from the crowds, and the large hotel overlooking the bay divides opinion.
When the wind blows from the west, rip currents can become dangerous, all the more so as lifeguards are only on duty in high season. To make the most of it, come early in the morning or late in the day, outside July and August.
Strengths
- One of the largest natural golden-sand beaches on the main island, a real rarity in Malta
- Gentle slope and shallow water for tens of metres out: perfect for children and non-swimmers
- Among the finest sunsets in Malta, facing west, framed by the cliffs and the watchtower
- Blue Flag beach in 2025, with lifeguards in high season (Red Cross)
- Very well equipped: sunbeds, parasols, bars, restaurants and plenty of water sports (jet ski, parasailing, diving, boat trips)
- Starting point for superb clifftop walks to the wilder neighbouring bays of Għajn Tuffieħa and Ġnejna
Weaknesses
- A victim of its own popularity: the beach is crowded from late morning through the afternoon in summer, especially at weekends
- Water that turns cloudy and green in the afternoon (seaweed and sand stirred up by the crowds); crystal clear in the morning and beyond the buoys
- Cleanliness drops in high season: cigarette butts and litter on the sand, with maintenance failing to keep pace with the crowds
- Genuine rip currents when the wind blows from the west, dangerous off-season when the lifeguards are gone
- The sprawling Radisson Blu resort overlooking the bay divides opinion and, for many, spoils the scenery
Frequently asked questions about Golden Bay
Is Golden Bay suitable for children?
Yes. The beach shelves gently and the water stays shallow for tens of metres, which is reassuring for younger swimmers. Lifeguards are on duty in high season. Bring water shoes: a band of rocks lines the water's edge on one side of the bay.
When is the best time to enjoy Golden Bay?
Early in the morning the water is clear, the sand is clean and the spots near the water are still free. Late in the day is ideal for the sunset, once the crowds have gone. Avoid the middle of the afternoon in July and August and at weekends, when the beach is overrun.
Why is the water at Golden Bay sometimes cloudy?
Crystal clear early in the morning, it often turns cloudy in the afternoon: the seaweed and golden sand are stirred up by swimmers and the swell. The effect is confined to the shoreline; the water clears again beyond the buoys and over the rocky bottom on either side of the bay.
How do you get to Golden Bay by bus?
Several direct routes serve the Għajn Tuffieħa terminus: the 44 from Valletta, the 101 from Mellieħa, the 225 from St Julian's and the 223 from Buġibba. Allow anything from 20 minutes to a little over an hour depending on where you set off.
Is there parking at Golden Bay?
Yes, two car parks: one lower down near the beach, the other at the top of the hill. Both are free, but they fill up quickly in summer. Avoid the yellow lines, or you risk a fine.
Does Golden Bay have the Blue Flag?
Yes, it is on the list of Maltese beaches awarded the Blue Flag in 2025, a mark of water quality, safety and services.
Is swimming dangerous at Golden Bay?
In calm seas it is safe and supervised in season. But when the wind blows from the west, rip currents can form and become dangerous, especially off-season once the lifeguards have left the beach. Always follow the flag system.
