Ġnejna Bay is the most local and authentic beach in north-west Malta, well away from the resorts and barely a kilometre from the village of Mġarr. Tucked between clay slopes and limestone cliffs crowned by the 17th-century Lippija Tower, it stands out for its cave-like fishermen's huts, the boat garages carved into the rock that give it so much character. Its orange-tinged sand, family atmosphere and sunsets make it a firm favourite with the Maltese, who set up their barbecues here in the evening. Best of all, unlike its neighbour Għajn Tuffieħa and its long flight of steps, Ġnejna can be reached by car right down to the car park at the water's edge, with no stairs: it is the easiest of the trio to get to. The flip side of the setting: the entry into the water is often pebbly (water shoes recommended), cleanliness is hit and miss, and the free car park fills up quickly in summer.

Activities available at Ġnejna Bay

Ġnejna lends itself to gentle water activities. The right-hand side of the bay, rockier, offers a good snorkelling spot in clear water; kayaks, paddleboards, pedalos and small boats can be hired on the sand. Kayak and boat trips run to the nearby caves and coves, and the bay serves as a starting point for fine cliff-top walks towards Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay.

Where to stay near Ġnejna Bay

No hotel lines Ġnejna, which has remained a village beach. Accommodation is to be found in the surrounding area, in the centre of Mġarr or Mellieħa, about fifteen minutes away by car, with options such as the Maritim Antonine, the Solana or the Pergola. For a stay right by the sea, the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Golden Sands overlooks neighbouring Golden Bay. Another, livelier option is St Paul's Bay, about twenty minutes away, with for example the Pebbles Resort.

Location of Ġnejna Bay

Ġnejna Bay opens onto the west coast of Malta, in the locality of Mġarr, about a kilometre below the village. A narrow, winding road descends the Wied il-Ġnejna valley to the car park, laid out right at the edge of the beach: direct access by car, without the long flight of steps of its neighbour. The bay is framed by clay slopes and limestone cliffs topped by the Lippija watchtower, built in 1637 by the Knights of St John. On the left stand the famous fishermen's huts cut into the sandstone. Cliff paths link Ġnejna to its neighbours, Għajn Tuffieħa to the north and then Golden Bay, about thirty minutes' walk away; steep and rugged, they are not advised for young children or people with reduced mobility.

Getting to Ġnejna Bay

By bus to Ġnejna Bay

Ġnejna is far easier to reach by car than by bus. The only direct line is the 101, from Mġarr and Mellieħa; from Valletta, St Julian's or the airport, you need to change onto the 101, which makes for a longer journey. The service is also cut back off-season. The stop drops you a few minutes' walk from the car park.

By car to Ġnejna Bay

The car is by far the most convenient way to reach Ġnejna. If you have gone for a car rental, follow the road that winds down the valley from Mġarr to the free car park, laid out right at the water's edge: no stairs and no long walk, a rare bonus on this coast. The car park is small, though, and fills up from late morning at weekends and in summer, so arrive early.

Good to know: a man sometimes passes himself off as an attendant and demands 1 to 2 € on this car park, even though it is public and free. You are under no obligation to pay.

Without a car, the most comfortable option is a car with a driver. Malta's white taxis are not recommended; go instead for eCabs (a local service), Uber or Bolt. Allow roughly 35 minutes from the airport and 50 minutes from Sliema or St Julian's. The final stretch of road, narrow and winding, calls for a little care.

Reviews of Ġnejna Bay

4.0 /5

Ġnejna Bay is the Maltese locals' beach: away from the hotels and the crowds, it wins people over with its calm, its natural setting and its authentic atmosphere, defined by the fishermen's huts carved into the rock. Its orange-tinged sand, its sunsets and the walks that link it to Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay make it one of the island's favourite bays, often felt to be more peaceful than its famous neighbours.

Its great strength is access: the road runs down to the car park, right at the water's edge, without the long flight of steps at Għajn Tuffieħa, which makes it manageable with children and gear, and even by wheelchair straight from a car. The drawback lies in the water: the entry is often pebbly, sometimes strewn with large rocks, and you are better off bringing water shoes and using the channel of sand on the left.

Cleanliness remains patchy, somewhere between seasonal seagrass and litter depending on the day, and the small car park fills up early in summer, where a bogus attendant sometimes asks for a coin. To make the most of it, it is best to come early in the morning, avoid very windy days and bear in mind that the bus service is limited.

Strengths

  • Easy to reach by car: a road runs right down to the car park at the water's edge, with no steps (unlike Għajn Tuffieħa)
  • The most local and peaceful of the trio, with no hotel or tourist crowds, popular with the Maltese from Mġarr
  • An authentic setting: cave-like fishermen's huts, clay slopes, cliffs and the 17th-century Lippija Tower
  • Orange-tinged sand and crystal-clear water, one of the few genuine sandy beaches in Malta
  • West-facing sunsets and superb walks to neighbouring Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay
  • A 'two in one' beach: a shallow sandy side for families and a rocky side for snorkelling

Weaknesses

  • The entry into the water is often pebbly, even rocky: water shoes are strongly recommended
  • Cleanliness is hit and miss, with seasonal seagrass (posidonia), especially after windy spells
  • The car park is free but small, full by late morning at weekends and in summer
  • A bogus attendant sometimes demands 1 to 2 € on this car park, even though it is public and free
  • Poorly served by bus (only the 101, with a reduced timetable off-season) and the bay is exposed to the wind

Frequently asked questions about Ġnejna Bay

How do you get to Ġnejna Bay?

By car it is very simple: a road runs down from Mġarr to a car park laid out at the water's edge, with no stairs or long walk. It is the easiest beach to reach in the area. By bus, only the 101 serves the bay directly (from Mġarr and Mellieħa), with a reduced service off-season.

Do you need water shoes at Ġnejna?

Yes, it is strongly recommended. The beach is sandy, but the entry into the water is often pebbly, sometimes strewn with large slippery rocks. A channel of sand, usually on the left, makes it easier to get in.

Is Ġnejna Bay suitable for families?

Yes. The left-hand side shelves gently into shallow water, watched over by lifeguards in season, and the step-free access makes it easy to come with children and gear. Just remember to bring water shoes.

Is there a car park at Ġnejna, and do you have to pay 'the attendant'?

The car park, at the edge of the beach, is public and free, but small: it fills up by late morning at weekends and in summer. A man sometimes passes himself off as an attendant and demands 1 to 2 €: you are under no obligation to pay.

What are the Ġnejna huts?

They are boat garages and former fishermen's houses carved into the rock, on the left-hand side of the bay. Often built without permits, they give the place all its character, even if they divide opinion among visitors.

What is the difference with Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa?

Ġnejna is the most local and the most peaceful of the three, with no hotel on the beach, and the easiest to reach by car. Għajn Tuffieħa (Riviera) is wilder but involves a long flight of steps; Golden Bay is larger and better equipped. The three are linked by cliff paths.

Does Ġnejna Bay have the Blue Flag?

No. Unlike neighbouring Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa, Ġnejna is not on the list of Maltese beaches awarded the Blue Flag in 2025.
