Buġibba Perched Beach is a man-made beach built in the heart of Buġibba, on the seafront of St Paul's Bay, in the north of Malta. Created in 2011 by spreading sand over a 141-metre rocky platform, it is a 'perched beach' raised above the water, reached by ladders and ramps. Its main asset is the location: right on the Buġibba promenade, lined with bars, restaurants and shops, it is one of the most accessible beaches on the island, with a lifeguard, showers and ramps for people with reduced mobility. The deep, clear water makes it a popular snorkelling spot, but the rocky shore calls for water shoes. Blue Flag awarded, it appeals through convenience more than beauty: small, quick to get crowded and often criticised for its cleanliness in peak season.

Buġibba Perched Beach is one of the 10 Blue Flag beaches in Malta. The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised eco-label awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that meet rigorous criteria in four areas: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services. It is one of the most trusted quality marks for a clean, safe and well-managed beach worldwide.

By car to Buġibba Perched Beach

If you have rented a car during your stay in Malta, bear in mind that Buġibba is a very dense tourist area where parking is hard in peak season. There is no dedicated beach car park: only street parking is available along the promenade and in the nearby streets, often full during the day.

Without a car, a taxi or ride-hailing service is a practical option. In Malta the three most common services are eCabs (a local provider), Uber and Bolt. As Buġibba is a major tourist hub, vehicles are plentiful at all hours.

Reviews of Buġibba Perched Beach

3.5 /5

Buġibba Perched Beach is not a natural beach but an urban development: a strip of artificial sand laid over a rocky platform, in the very centre of Buġibba. Its visitors are above all holidaymakers staying in Buġibba and Qawra, who come for a quick, convenient swim, steps from the promenade, the bars and the restaurants.

Its strengths are real: remarkably clear water, ideal for snorkelling over fish-rich rocky beds, an unbeatable central location and full facilities (lifeguard, showers, sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, restaurant). A small shallow sandy area and an inflatable water park appeal to families, and access is made easy for people with reduced mobility. The Blue Flag confirms the bathing water quality.

The limits are just as clear. Cleanliness often leaves something to be desired in peak season, a victim of overcrowding. The rocky shore and the water that quickly gets deep call for water shoes and put off hesitant swimmers. The space is small and quickly crowded, in a noisy urban setting. Buġibba Perched Beach is ideal for a convenient swim while staying in Buġibba, but not for those seeking a real natural sandy beach, better served by the bays of the north-west.

Strengths

  • Remarkably clear water, ideal for snorkelling over fish-rich rocky beds
  • Ultra-central location, right on the Buġibba promenade (bars, restaurants, shops)
  • Full facilities: lifeguard, showers, sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, on-site bar-restaurant
  • Easy access for people with reduced mobility thanks to steel ramps
  • Shallow sandy area and inflatable water park enjoyed by families
  • Blue Flag beach, a guarantee of bathing water quality

Weaknesses

  • Uneven cleanliness in peak season: litter often on the sand and in the water
  • Rocky shore and water that quickly gets deep: water shoes needed, access via ladders and ramps
  • Small size (141 metres long) that fills up fast in summer
  • Coarse artificial sand, at times closer to gravel than to fine sand
  • Noisy urban setting: seafront road, music from the bars, construction work in the background
