About Maltalingua

Maltalingua (Maltalingua School of English) is an English language school located in St Julian’s, on Birkirkara Hill, just above Balluta Bay. This boutique, family-run British-owned school was founded in 2012 and welcomes students from all over the world year round. It offers a wide range of courses: General English (20 lessons), Intensive (30 or 40 lessons), Business English in mini groups, exam preparation (IELTS and Cambridge), private lessons, plus kids (8-12), teens (13-17) and family programmes in summer, at Easter and in autumn, as well as Erasmus+ courses. Courses start every Monday, from beginner (A1) to advanced (C1).

The school occupies a historic building a stone’s throw from the sea and has 14 modern, air-conditioned classrooms fitted with interactive whiteboards, plus a computer room and a library. Its signature asset: the large rooftop terrace with a swimming pool, the school’s true social hub. Adult courses run in small groups of 12 students maximum (8 to 10 on average), junior courses up to 15. Several accommodation options are available: student apartments (the most popular choice), host families, a “Stay with a Teacher” option and partner hotels from 3 to 5 stars.

Maltalingua accreditations

Maltalingua is an official English language teaching institution: it holds the ELT Council licence, issued by the Maltese Ministry of Education, which licenses and monitors every English school in the archipelago.

The school is also EAQUALS-accredited (Evaluation and Accreditation of Quality Language Services), a mark of teaching quality, and takes part in the European Erasmus+ programme, welcoming students and teachers on mobility placements. Its distinctions speak for themselves: at the ST Star Awards, the language travel industry’s leading awards, Maltalingua is the only Maltese school ever shortlisted in the “English Language School Europe” category, and its junior programme has been nominated there several times.

Reviews of Maltalingua

Maltalingua has one of the best ratings among Malta’s English schools. Its attentive teachers are its greatest asset: skilled and committed, they help students progress quickly. The family atmosphere of this human-scale school, the rich activity programme and the rooftop terrace with its pool, where everyone gathers after class, also come up constantly. The reservations mainly concern the student apartments, of uneven cleanliness and upkeep, and the organisation of the junior and teen programmes, which has room for improvement. The flip side of its size: with few classrooms, the school cannot always offer a fine-grained split of language levels, and occasional timetable changes do occur.

Pros

  • Committed, skilled teachers and rapid progress (the most cited point)
  • Boutique, human-scale British-owned school with a family feel
  • Rooftop terrace with a pool, the school’s social hub
