The ESE school in St Julian’s

European School of English is one of the most respected institutions in the Maltese islands for learning English. Founded in 1996, this independent school has established itself as a benchmark in teaching English as a foreign language, building solid expertise in language training for an international audience.

The school sits in St Julian’s, on Paceville Avenue, a stone’s throw from the liveliest part of Malta. Its modern premises spread over three floors and include 60 bright, air-conditioned classrooms. Courses run at every level, from complete beginner (A1) to advanced (C2), in small groups of no more than 12 students.

ESE holds an official ELT Council licence, confirming its recognition by the Maltese authorities. The school is also a member of FELTOM, Malta’s national association of language schools, and holds EAQUALS accreditation, an internationally recognised mark of excellence guaranteeing the highest standards in language teaching.

The St Julian’s neighbourhood

St Julian’s is the liveliest district on the island, and the one most adults travelling on their own choose. Spinola Bay and its restaurants are five minutes away, Paceville and its nightlife ten, and the seafront promenade takes you to Sliema in a twenty-minute walk.

The bus reaches Valletta in half an hour and the airport in forty minutes. It’s also where the late-opening shops are concentrated, which matters when lessons finish at 5 pm.

The English courses

Two core options: General English at 20 lessons per week (15 hours), and Intensive English at 30 lessons (22.5 hours). Lessons last 45 minutes, from beginner level A1 to advanced level C2.

A placement test is taken online before departure and confirmed on your first Monday. The school also runs Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC exam preparation, as well as Business English. Your end-of-course certificate states the CEFR level you have reached.

The activity programme

Adult stays come with a weekly activity programme designed to bring students of all nationalities together and keep the English going outside the classroom. The programme changes every week and taking part is entirely up to you. Some activities are free, others are paid: expect between 5 and 30 euros depending on the outing.

On your first day, a guided orientation walk takes you around Paceville: transport, shops and the everyday services you’ll actually use. A welcome party is held in your first week, a chance to meet the other students and the teaching team.

In summer, the ESE Beach Club is free to use from Monday to Friday. It’s about a ten-minute walk from the school.

The programme mixes cultural excursions, visits to historic sites and leisure time, so it suits history lovers just as well as those who come for sport and the sea. The highlight is a guided half-day in Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage city, with entry to the Malta Experience audiovisual show included. Then come Mdina, the Blue Lagoon on Comino, the Blue Grotto and the Marsaxlokk fish market. A leisure desk inside the school helps you build a programme of your own.

Frequently asked questions

What level of English do I need for ESE?

None. The school takes everyone from complete beginner to C2 and opens A1 groups all year round. The placement test is taken online before you leave.

How many students per class?

12 at most, with an average of around 8 outside July and August. That’s the cap guaranteed by EAQUALS accreditation.

Can I arrive on any day of the week?

Accommodation is booked Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday. Lessons, however, always start on a Monday.

What exactly does the stay include?

The course, your chosen accommodation (utilities and Wi-Fi included), the airport transfer on arrival, the placement test and the end-of-stay certificate. In a host family, breakfast and dinner are provided; in an apartment or residence, a fully equipped kitchen leaves you free to cook. Flights, lunch, the return transfer and personal expenses are not included — every line is itemised in the calculator.

Is insurance compulsory?

ESE offers Guard.me insurance as an option. It is strongly recommended for students from outside the European Union, where the European Health Insurance Card does not apply.

Is ESE an officially licensed English school in Malta?

ESE is one of the 32 officially licensed English schools in Malta in 2026. It holds an ELT Council licence, issued by the Maltese Ministry of Education.

What is the eco tax in Malta?

The eco tax (“eco contribution”) is a tourist tax levied by the Maltese state and collected by every licensed accommodation provider in Malta and Gozo. Since 1 July 2026 it stands at 1.50 € per night per person aged 18 or over, capped at 22.50 € per stay: beyond the 15th night it is no longer charged. It is collected by your accommodation and appears on its own line in the price breakdown of our calculator.

What is the high season supplement on a language stay?

At certain times of year the school raises its price. Here are the periods concerned and the rule applied:

  • High season, accommodation — from 27 June to 29 August 2026 : supplement of €50.00 to €85.00/week depending on accommodation and duration

The season is assessed week by week, based on the Monday of each week: only the weeks falling within a period above carry the supplement, not the whole stay.
