General English course

The General English course, also known as GE20, is the most popular learning format for students in Malta. Whatever the school, it corresponds to a programme of 20 lessons of 45 minutes per week or 15 hours of English lessons per week. Classes are held in small groups of 10 to 15 students, depending on the school.

Intensive General English Course

The General English Intensive course, also known as GE30, has the same format as the General English course, but with more class hours. Whatever the school, the Intensive or GE30 corresponds to 30 lessons of 45 minutes per week or 22.30 hours of English lessons per week. The courses are taught in small groups of 10 to 15 students, depending on the school, and are divided between morning and afternoon.

Business English

Business English is a course taught in small groups and is designed to improve your English for professional purposes. English exam preparation course

Exam preparation courses are designed to prepare students who wish to take an English language exam in order to achieve a high score. It is possible to prepare for the most popular certification exams such as TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge. Some Maltese schools are also examination centres and allow you to take the test at the end of your preparation.

English courses for children and teenagers are available for students aged 8 to 17 during the main European school holidays. Students are divided by age group and level of English. The junior courses also have the special feature of including an activity programme to keep students constantly busy.

The courses + are English language courses offered by some schools in Malta and are only open to students of a minimum age. Depending on the school, some courses are accessable to students over 30, 40 or 50 years of age. This course format allows adult students to integrate more easily.

Duration of English courses in Malta

Travelling to Malta to study English is motivated by the desire to achieve rapid progress in Shakespeare’s language. But how long does it really take to learn English in Malta?

Depending on the individual’s learning ability, learning time may vary. However, it is generally considered that 6-8 weeks of General English classes are needed to reach a certain level of language proficiency. Depending on your starting level and your objective, it will be easy for you to assess the number of weeks that your English course in Malta should theoretically take.

It is possible to study English in Malta for a wide range of durations, from a short week to 36 weeks (9 months). From 8 weeks (2 months) courses are considered long term, the weekly fee is automatically lower. Courses are available from 12 weeks (3 months).

How do English courses in Malta work?

All schools operate in a similar way. Each enrolled student must take a placement test, which is usually taken online or on the first day of class. In addition, an oral placement test is given on the first day of class. The test assesses the student’s fundamental knowledge of English (writing, reading, listening and speaking). Once the student’s level has been determined, he/she will be assigned to a level class. The student then participates in English classes in a class with students of an equivalent language level.

All schools in Malta offer 45-minute English lessons (except EF Malta). Courses are held throughout the year in Malta and start every Monday. Depending on the school and the type of course, the student will be in a class of no more than 15 students, with an average of 10-12 students per class. Classes are held in multicultural classrooms, the mix of nationalities ensures multicultural diversity and promotes the use of English for communication.

Language level and progression

All language schools in Malta conduct regular tests to assess each student’s level of English. Regular assessments allow progress to be monitored at the end of each week. When a student moves up to a higher level, he/she automatically changes classes to be with students of a higher level. Therefore, the student is constantly with students with more or less the same level of English.

There are 6 language levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), these levels are taken into account to follow the evolution of the students, whatever the English language school in Malta.

A1

Beginner English Level

You understand simple sentences, can introduce yourself, ask for and give basic personal information.

A2

Elementary English Level

You can talk about your habits and routines, make simple sentences. However, communication is limited to simple and predictable topics.

B1

Intermediate English level

You can briefly justify your opinions or explain your plans in a limited way. You can also understand simple conversations if spoken slowly and clearly.

B2

Upper Intermediate English Level

You can understand the main content of complex texts on different subjects. You can communicate spontaneously and express yourself on a variety of subjects.

C1

Advanced English Level

You can understand complex texts and can express yourself fluently. You can also write clear, correct and detailed texts on complex subjects.

C2

Proficiency English level

It is a level where you can compare yourself with a native speaker. As a result, you can express yourself spontaneously, correctly and very fluently. You are also able to understand with ease practically everything you hear or read.
