Popeye Village (Malta)

Triq Tal-Prajjet, Il-Mellieħa, Malte

Popeye Village is Malta’s main theme park and one of the archipelago’s top tourist attractions. The park, built in 1980 for the musical comedy "Popeye" starring Robin Williams, is a reconstruction of the famous fictional seaside town "Sweethaven". It has been preserved since filming and redeveloped with various attractions based on the universe of the iconic sailor with disproportionately large forearms, to entertain children and adults alike.

History of Popeye Village

The construction of Popeye Village, also known as “Sweethaven Village“, began in June 1979, requiring the coordinated efforts of an international team of 165 builders who worked tirelessly for seven months.

The construction of Popeye Village and its 20 colorful wooden cottages was an ambitious project. It required building a nearly 60-meter breakwater at the mouth of Anchor Bay, constructing an access road, importing hundreds of tree trunks from the Netherlands, thousands of shingles from Canada, and several tons of nails.

Filming of the movie “Popeye” began on January 23, 1980, and ended on June 19 of the same year, marking the end of a period of intense activity on site. Cinematically, the movie received mixed reviews from audiences, despite starring Robin Williams in the lead role of Popeye. However, the film left a tangible legacy in the form of this village, now converted into a theme park, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world each year.

Attractions of Popeye Village in Malta

Besides its unique atmosphere of a reconstructed village based on the theme of Popeye, Popeye Village offers numerous shows and attractions. The park is divided into two levels: the lower complex, the “Lower Complex”, for adults and teenagers, and the upper complex, the “Upper Complex”, designed for younger children (under 12).
